Nice Speech from a Philippine Tycoon - Gokongwei

Until a friend told me I did not know that he too has a rags-to-riches story to tell. He owns Robinson malls, Universal Robina Foods , etc. and is filthy rich. Please refer to the site below but if you could not find it I copied the text below for you! http://www.timog.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13772&referrerid=4637 John Gokongwei's Speech An inspiring speech John Gokongwei made before Ateneo graduates, but nevertheless a very inspiring read for everyone. _______________I wish I were one of you today, instead of a 77-year-old man, giving a speech you will probably forget when you wake up from your hangover tomorrow. You may be surprised I feel this way. Many of you are feeling fearful and apprehensive about your future. You are thinking that, perhaps, your Ateneo diploma will not mean a whole lot in the future in a country with too many problems. And you are probably right. You are thinking that our country is slipping, no, sliding. Again, you may be right.Twenty years ago, we...

Nice Quote - Mistakes and Errors

Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are a part of learning. In fact we learn more from our mistakes than from doing things right. I remember when a popular Filipina singer made an insulting commenton one of the audiences in one of her concerts and the media attacked her. She apologized for the bad comment and quoted: "To Err is Human but to forgive is Divine"

Life Enriching Quotations - and Longfellow

I still remember vividly - I can picture my elementary school classroom decorated with posters of famous quotations. Perhaps I was grade 2 in P. Gomez, Elementary School a leading public school in Manila and if I am not mistaken my English teacher was a kind old lady named Mrs. Rivera. One of my favorites was the quote below whose image in my mind remained in even after 28 years exactly as it was displayed in the classroom wall: “Kind hearts are the gardens, Kind thoughts are the roots, Kind words are the flowers, Kind deeds are the fruits.Take care of your garden And keep out the weeds, Fill it with sunshine Kind words and kind deeds.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I searched it on the web and found a "cool" site which says that Longfellow was the the most popular American Poet in the 19th century, 1807 - 1882 : http://thinkexist.com/ I also found this nice quoute about Kindness: “ Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the and the blind can see ” Mark ...

A Tribute to All Mothers and Baby Sitters (Poem)

The Hand That Rocks The CradleIs The Hand That Rules The World The Hand That Rocks The CradleIs The Hand That Rules The World Blessings on the hand of women! Angels guard its strength and grace, In the palace, cottage, hovel, Oh, no matter where the place; Would that never storms assailed it, Rainbows ever gently curled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world. Infancy's the tender fountain, Power may with beauty flow, Mother's first to guide the streamlets, From them souls unresting grow-- Grow on for the good or evil, Sunshine streamed or evil hurled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world. Woman, how divine your mission Here upon our natal sod! Keep, oh, keep the young heart open Always to the breath of God! All true trophies of the ages Are from mother-love impearled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world. Blessings on the hand of women! Fathers, sons, and daughters cry, And the sacred so...

Fav-Song Lyrics-004: Are you Lonesome Tonight - by Elvis Presley

Are you Lonesome Tonight ? Sang by Elvis Presley (words & music by roy turk and lou handman) Are you lonesome tonight, Do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart? Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day When I kissed you and called you sweetheart? Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again? Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight? I wonder if youre lonesome tonight You know someone said that the worlds a stage And each must play a part. Fate had me playing in love you as my sweet heart. Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue Then came act two, you seemed to change and you acted strange And why Ill never know. Honey, you lied when you said you loved me And I had no cause to doubt you. But Id rather go on hearing your lies Than go on living without you. Now the stage is bare ...

Quotes About Love from the Bible [ 今日のことわざ: 愛について聖書より」

Japanese follows English: [日本語は英語の下」 Corinthians 13:1-8a and 13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails....And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Ephesians 5:33 However, each one of ...

Bansuido and Shoji-san (Part I)

Image
In the first week of August, 2007, I went to an old house in Sendai City called “Bansuisodo”. This house was actually rebuilt by students of Doi Bansui – a great poet and literary figure of Sendai . His original house that used to stand in the same location was destroyed during World War II. His students loved him so much that they chipped in to rebuild t their beloved professor’s house. Below is an excerpt taken from Sendai City homepage: Doi Bansui ( 1871 ~ 1963 ) Doi Bansui was a poet and scholar of English literature born in Sendai , and is best known as the lyricist of the song Kojo no Tsuki (The Moon Over the Ruined Castle ). His house, the Bansuisodo, stands as a memento of the days he lived. This literary heritage still runs in Sendai and continues to steadily produce famous writers, such as Isaka Kotaro, Saeki Kazumi, Sena Hideaki, and Kumagai Tatsuya. It was a weekday afternoon so I was the only visitor at the old house. However, I was warnly welco...

Funny "Green" Joke: Good Can of Corn

Image
Minors , please stop reading and close your eyes. Good Can of Corn There were three couples, one elderly, one middle aged, and one newlywed, that wanted to join a church. So the minister tells them that in order to be members they must abstain from sex for two whole weeks. After two weeks, the minister asks the elderly couple if they had abstained. "Yes, no problem!" So the minister welcomes them to the church. Then he asks the middle aged couple the same question "Well, after one week, the husband had to sleep on the couch, but we made it!" So the minister welcomes them to the church. Then the minister asks the newlywed couple if they had abstained from sex for two weeks. Piolo Pascual sang "Superman" in Japan

Out of the blue while at a Hotel room in Sendai during my biz trip, I remembered the popular actor Piolo Pascual sang the song "Superman" at the "Hearts on Fire" concert in Japan in 2002. For me, the handsome and gentle actor made an excellent rendition of the song and so good that it stuck in my mind from then on. I did like the song from that time and it played constantly in my mind. So I decided to download the song on the internet - the original one by "Five for Fighting". I also looked up the lyrics and would like to share it with you folks below... What is the true meaning of this song ? Was it used in the movie "Superman returns" ? Anyways, for me its a revelation that the "superman" amongst us do have their weaknesses but they cannot complain. Perhaps its time to pause and think and be considerate about those people we rely so heavily upon and realize that they too are also human. PLEASE feel free to comment on what...

What is the meaning of Life for you?

For me Life is all about Love - about God's love for mankind, and our love for God. God loves us from the time we were conceived. As written in the Bible, He shaped us in our mothers' womb. And in return, we express our love for Him by glorifying Him and obeying all His commandments, which are all but guidelines in life for our own good. We also express our love for Him by loving the rest of His creation - our family, relatives, friends, neighbor and the rest of humanity. We also love the animals and the bountiful nature He had granted us. Indeed our entire life , for me , should be spent in expressing this profound love. If we do we shall have both Peace and a greener earth and everyone will live happily ever after. Whoever you are in this World of Love, let me say there are at least 5 persons who love you - God, Christ, your parents and me. I love you! How about you? What is the meaning of Life in your own personal opinion? Please free to post your comments/answer.

[Leadership#2] 7 Lessons from World Series Baseball Champions

QUOTE: "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves." Ray Kroc TIP: 7 Leadership Lessons from World Series Baseball Champions By HR Consultant and Sports Executive Skip Weisman Here are some strategies that have created champions that I've learned, in 20 years of leading the front office of professional baseball teams ... and that business leaders can follow. 1) Develop Strong Leadership at the Top Championship teams start with strong leadership in the front office and coaching staff. This creates a solid foundation throughout the organization. Without strength at the top, leaders will not be emerge and be developed in a way that allows the organization to thrive. Leaders must manage by example and be masters of "self-leadership," modeling the behaviors and core values they expect their team members to espouse. 2) Lead with the 'Platinum Rule' Successful coaches know that different people are motivated by different t...

About Leadership #1 = Quotation

"Leadership is not magnetic personality — that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not 'making friends and influencing people' -- that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to high sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations." - Peter F. Drucker

Learning American History

Back in High School , during the late 80s, I saw tons of American History books in our library and was looking forward to learn more about our 2nd conqueror. But it turned out that the subject was scrapped just before our UST-EHS school batch (Is it perhaps due to the growing anti-american sentiment in the universities ? I remember Students , particularly from UP marching the streets shouting slogans against "imperialistic regimes". ) Anyways, I am realized how much I missed while watching Hollywood movies and american tv dramas. They almost constantly refer to historical events in U.S. history that I am not familiar with. I sometimes felt lost and "out of league". Luckily, I asked my colleague, Bill, and he taught me the site below to be a place to start: http://www.pbs.org/history/history_united.html Hope y'all enjoy ! Thanks, Bill !
